Our Recovery from Aplastic Anemia

I was graciously invited to  write our story about my wife and her diagnoses and ongoing recovery from Aplastic Anemia.  I want everyone to know that sometimes solutions present themselves in a less-than-conventional manner.  Be skeptical, but at least listen.
Our story begins like this; In 2009 my wife, Sheri, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a disease where the bone marrow is sick and cannot produce enough healthy red and white blood cells, or platelets.  We weren’t too concerned at first, the doctors said that Sheri’s blood and platelets were at a high enough level that there was no danger.  Routine blood tests showed a gradual decline though, primarily in her platelets. After a year and a half or so we started seeing the numbers dropping faster.  We were assured by the doctors that there was nothing they could do, no one knows what causes it, or really how to treat it until it is life threatening.  We were informed that when she got low enough, they would possibly remove the spleen, start blood transfusions, and look for a bone marrow donor for a transplant.  With her having a rare blood type and no siblings, we didn’t like the sound of that.  We felt like God gave us a spleen for a reason, blood transfusion don’t seem to be doing much for anybody except buying time, and the immune suppression therapies I read about seemed torturous.   Her platelet counts dropped through the 60’s and into the 50’s (the safe range minimum is 140).  My parents finally convinced me to call a Naturopath Physician/Veterinarian on his radio show, I was reluctant but with nothing to lose I relented.  To my surprise I got through.
When I told him about the Aplastic Anemia, he immediately told me that it was not an auto-immune as was the conventional belief, but rather it was a vitamin B-12 and folic acid deficiency almost always stemming from digestion issues.  He told us how to treat it using nothing more than his formula of minerals and vitamins, and some natural (not herbal) aids to help the digestion.  After the call, I was pretty confident this guy was a quack…if the answer was that easy we would have been told long before now, right?  With nothing to lose we took a leap of (my parent’s) faith and gave it a shot.  My dad looked it up in this doctor’s book, it said that it would take around 120 days to see changes due to the length of time it takes the body to produce blood and platelet cells.
Just as predicted, after 4 months her counts went up for the first time in three years.  This was no fluke it turned out, her counts have been on a steady rise since.  Her last blood test, taken in late August (we found a pharmacy that would draw blood for a fraction of what the doctor charged) showed her platelet count up to 98!!  The absolute neutrophils are in the safe range for the first time in 4 years!  White and red blood counts are up!  She feels better, she has better color, and is living a very normal life, no transfusions, no bone marrow transplant, and NO MORE DOCTORS for over a year.  I’ve left out a lot of detail, there’s so much to tell.
To say Doctor Wallach or ‘Doc’ as we affectionately call him is controversial would be an understatement.  But he has a huge story, and after much investigation is what I would consider one of the most brilliant minds I can think of. He has years of legitimate research behind him, and he lives to spread that knowledge.  I have heard story after story of Doc helping people get stronger, healthier and take back their health.   He showed us how to fix what the doctors couldn’t. My eyes have been opened to a world of medicine that is more natural, more effective, and achieves far better results in many chronic illnesses than I possibly could have imagined.  A medicine that has no side effects, because the substances used are natural to the body.  I’m not talking about ‘natural’ herbs, although they have their place.  I’m talking about rebuilding the body with the fundamental building materials that the body is comprised of in the first place. These fundamental building blocks are what it takes to build a baby from two small cells, to heal broken bones and cuts.  Why not use them to make the body make itself stronger, to heal what is wrong.
Doc is on a crusade to help people heal.  While he feels that conventional medicine has it’s use, he feels that conventional western medicine doctors often lack the knowledge to treat chronic health issues appropriately.  I mean no disrespect to doctors, no single person can be the keeper of all knowledge.  While Doc makes no promises when it comes to cancers, he has certainly helped a lot of people.  His information and crusade has been an inspiration to me, and if I can help someone else with it, I will take every opportunity to do so.  If anyone would like information, please get a hold of me, my e-mail is 35dbantique@gmail.com.

So it’s been 18 months since my first (and last) post.  I would like to let everyone know what has been going on.  Sheri is doing very well, her platelets are up to 112!  We have run across a few bobbles in the upward trend, every time it has set us back a few points.  We have traced every one of the setbacks to a dietary change, so we have to be careful.  One of them was getting too much zinc in the diet, one of them we were taking an immune system booster (from the local organic foods store), and the last one occurred around October/November/December 2014.  Sheri doesn’t care about cakes, cookies, or any sweets, but almonds are here kryptonite.  We took a trip to Best Friends animal sanctuary to celebrate the platelets over 100!  So we bought a back of almonds, and this started a daily almond habit.  We found out that almonds belong to the phytate family.  While they are a nutritious food, they need to be taken apart from other vitamins and minerals, otherwise the phytates bind to them and clean them out.  So she quit eating the almonds and the next test was back up.  Now she’s feeling great and confident the next test will be even better.  She feels so good now that she has stopped worrying about it and can go about her day without the AA on her mind all the time.  I would be happy to share any information we have.  Feel  free to write me at my personal e-mail @ 35dbantique@gmail.com.  Wishing every one of you the best of health.

That was very interesting article. I have Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobin PNH. I have had it for years. My oncologist called John Hopkins and I took a special test. They wanted to put me on a damaging drug but I refused. I researched my alternatives. Very interesting what you said about almonds. I eat almond butter every day. This is a serious blood disorder. I enjoyed reading the article

Hi, im not sure whether the home-made treatment you encountered is always as positive for every human body, as we are all different and unique. However, i dont see any harm in trying the remedy and if it works i hope you and the person who invented this remedy are rewarded at up-most. i insist if you could please email me the exact remedy and the intake course from your experience with your wife. I am glad to here things have worked out for you, and i hope you can help me as i am in a very similar position as yourself, which you will understand how stressful and worrying it can be. i look forward from hearing from you. Thank You

    Dear Brother,

I read through your blog about your experience with Aplastic Anemia. Recently my mother at 65 years got detected with this disease. The doctors here suggested to have Bone Marrow Transplant, which is not possible at this age.

Can you just help me to suggesting the vitamins and minerals your wife took apart from Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 with lots of Almonds.

As she is having both Vitamin B12 & Folic Acid everyday as per our family doctors suggestion, based on your experience we can give her the same Vitamins and Minerals your wife took during her nadir days.I don’t know from which country you belongs to but certainly hope you will help me out to save another life of a mother.

Expecting a quicker reply from your end.

    Love n Peace

My son was diagnosed with mild aplastic anemia last August. Mild just means it is only affecting his red blood cells and marrow right now. He has been getting transfused every 3 weeks since his diagnosis. He is in a research study with the National Institute of Health in Maryland right now, but it doesn’t seem to be working.
His doctors are suggesting transfusions indefinitely or a bmt. Neither of these sound to good to us. My mom has been hounding us to try B12 and other homeopathic type remedies but I keep telling her they tested his B12 and found it normal. I didn’t realize it could be a misleading test. For once I actually hope she could be right. I wouldn’t mind eating crow if it meant we could avoid the lousy path we are on right now.

      Hello Nikunj,

first of all I pray for you to get well soon, One of my friend age 26 in New Mumbai is suffering from Aplastic Anemia, It is been 5 years he is being suffering from this, He is on continuous medication, gradually he is loosing his hopes to continue on medicines because as and when doctor tries to reduce his medicine to check the improvement, his platelets and blood count comes down, which states that his condition is still not better and dependent on medicines.

Some experts has advised him of replacement of Bone Marrow but that to no guarantee of 100% improvement, Operation is very much costly.

Well is there any food you found that helps to fight this?

I know there is not a lot of good news on the internet on the end results of AA, but it can be beat. Please write me on me personal e-mail. I need to update this blog, which I will soon. Sheri is doing well and has gotten tired of getting her blood taken and confident in her recovery enough that she hasn’t been in a long time. But she realizes that she still needs to monitor it and is talking about going in here soon, and I will update at that time. Sheri is using a powder mix that is available through a direct marketing company. Because they were gracious enough to invite me onto this blog and because of legal reasons, I do not want to feel like am advertising or soliciting on this blog. I will be more than happy to talk to anybody about it, but it will have to be through me personal e-mail and off of this blog.

I am a “desperate for answers” Mom of a 13-year old. He had a hepatitis last May, was treated as if it were autoimmune, with prednisone and azathioprine. By early August, hematology was involved as platelets were really on the slide. Now it’s full blown AA and the docs we see at Mayo Clinic suggest nothing in the way of diet and/or supplementation. It makes no sense that there is nothing wrong with the marrow outside of its being underproducing. I believe we just need to feed it better. The sorrow is that there’s another kid in the same straits also in treatment under the same doc, and this is supposedly so “rare”. Please advise. You are a little ray of hope.

Anemia is very common condition among the people especially in women and growing children. It is related to a problem with the haemoglobin cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. Deficiency of iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid can lead to anemia problem. If you are suffering from this condition and searching the solution, you should try Homemade Remedies for Anemia . It can cause several problems like headache, loss of energy, dizziness etc. if you want some better result, you can consider visiting this – Homemade Medicine for Anemia

I currently have mild aplastic anemia but my main concern is my future outcome as my bone marrow aspiration shows that I have a hypocellularity of 5-10% at age 35. The calculation is 100- your age for the average number (Therefore numbers appropriate for a 90-95 year old..which usually go down with age). I found out that if they would have known about my bone marrow numbers along years ago when I did have blood numbers that were more severe, a bone marrow transplant would very likely have been recommended. Luckily in a way, my old doctor didn’t really look deeply into my problem as my blood levels have improved quite a bit without traditional treatment on their own. I write this knowning it may all very well be a coincidence, however the improvements correspond directly with better digestion (which has been poor for years) from becoming vegan over a year ago. When I say vegan I mean plant based with no oils, lots and I mean lots of fruits and veggies including juices and smoothies with lots of greens (also nuts, flax, starchy veg for calories). I started off doing these things to support my digestion (which definitely worked), shortly before finding out about the Aplastic Anemia which they could see from my blood history was nothing new but that the numbers were much better blood count wise…bone marrow issue remains). Anything is worth trying if it will do no harm. It may do nothing for AP but it will certainly cut your chances of other diseases which has been well researched (i.e. heart disease, some cancers, diabetes). Also, if you are undergoing treatment it will promote better healing and recovery. They no longer restrict fresh veg and fruit as they used to with infection concerns with immune suppressing therapies as they found it actually has no scientific basis (however some still promote it).

I like the control of being able to feel like I am doing something to better my health. More empowering. Some research as been done in terms of omega fatty acids and bone marrow which my hematologist said should some small but positive results. Some research is also being done into vitamin D which I have been taking several times a week and never used to. I hope this helps someone. I keep trying every once and a while to find the actual studies but can’t seem to find a lot of anything. Thank you for sharing your wife’s story. I have never written a comment on any website before so I hope this is read by someone. It has been therapeutic. Thanks for posting everyone.

this is my nieces response when I told her about what I read above- have any thoughts on a replacement or integration towards health and elimination of those meds ? will she show improvement if she continues those in addition to doing everything else? Or how can she get off of them – is there a replacement to help?

    • 35dbantique
      May 15, 2016

Yes, this is nutrition, like eating high quality nutrient dense food that is tested and verified to have all of the nutrients in it that the food is supposed to have.

I have seen so many people get off their meds I have been amazed and that is the ONLY reason I would ever endorse a product. I am an engineer and live by facts and results, not by claims. I cannot recommend people getting off their meds, as I am not a doctor, however the patients and their doctors can work out the plans for that. Remember, you are paying the doctors to work for you, and you pay them well. If it was mechanic or a roofing contractor you wouldn’t hesitated to make demands as you pay them good money for what they do. Don’t be afraid to do the same with your doctor. With that in mind, and I speak from personal experience, quitting some meds cold turkey can have drastic effects, so work out the right plans with your doctor as your health improves. It won’t happen over night, but it can and will happen.

I am not the best at blogging, so a lot of these I find in my e-mail before or if I get to them on my blog. If I haven’t responded to someone, please e-mail me at my personal e-mail. Sheri is able to watch the e-mail more than I am so I get responses out faster. What Sheri is using to recover from AA is a very high quality broad spectrum mineral and vitamin complex. I would be happy to share details with you on my personal e-mail, but I won’t do it here. The people that run this site are very kind to allow me on their blog and I don’t want to act like I am advertising. I will tell you that AA is very much a nutrition issue caused from poor digestion. She had to go absolutely gluten free. She eats nothing with wheat, barley, rye, or oats in it, and tries to minimize phytates. She consumes nothing that is cooked with oil out of a bottle, we cook only with butter. And she drinks NO soda pop or other carbonated drinks (it depletes stomach acid). Eat lots of eggs, they are an amazingly healthy food. And please oh please NO STOMACH ACID REDUCING MEDICATIONS. That is most of what caused her AA. It inhibits digestion, and thus starves the body of nutrients.

Travis, congratulations on your wife’s recovery. I have a question, did your wife’s blood test show low vitamin B-12 and folic acid levels before the recovery?

    Thanks!

    • 35dbantique
      March 5, 2016

No, in fact the doctor helping my wife said that it wouldn’t, when I told him her B12 levels showed fine.. The blood will steal B12 from anywhere, including bone marrow, to stay stable. The best way to detect low B12 levels is with a methylmalonic acid test. This can be done from a normal blood draw, but it does cost extra and is hard to get doctors to do it. Methylmalonic acid is a byproduct of bone marrow when B12 levels are low. The higher the methylmalonic acid levels, the lower the B12 levels in the blood.

      Hello Harpreet Anand,
My apologies, I really need to get back on this blog more frequently. The supplements she is taking are a high quality minerals and vitamin supplement. In my opinion (keep in mind that I am an engineer not a doctor) medicine will never help AA. It is caused from a lack of nutrients, not a malfunctioning body, and certainly no medicine will fix it.

I will tell you what Sheri is taking if you want to personal e-mail me, I DO NOT want to sound like an advertisement on this blog, they have been too kind to let me write here and I detest people that sound like an advertisement on blogs.

I will say that she is taking a high quality, very broad spectrum mineral and vitamin complex. AND she went absolutely gluten free, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with wheat, barley, rye, or oats in it. No oil in a bottle of any kind, no fried foods, and no soda pop.

Eat lots of eggs (they are loaded with B-12 vitamins and many other nutrients), and a lot of healthy meat (avoid the meats with nitrates, like the ones that are sold commonly in our American delis).

My husband diagnosed with MDS June 2013. He started on Vidaza, but I truly feel that it was just an extension of prolonging the inevitable BMT. After much research on line, I started him on a excellent grade of nutritional supplements, green organic juicing and fresh fruits (papaya, mangos, pineapple etc.) 2 months after being diagnosed he went into total remission. He will be going in on Dec 4 for his second bone marrow biopsy to see where his blast are at. Of course the doctors feel it is the Vidaza (since I did not tell them about out home regiment) but I believe prayers and faith also have a lot to do with it. Hoping that he continues as your wife has on the healthy road.

Congratulations on the remission, and whatever you do DON’T stop the nutrition. Do everything you can to get your ORAC score (antioxidants) above 100,000 per day. And prayers are always essential.
Wishing you and your husband great health.

So glad he’s in remission! Hopefully next biopsy shows he’s still in remission. I very much believe in diet changes, energy healing, juicing and any alternative meds. I take papaya leaf extract pills for my platelets and detox not only with diet but also by doing steam/sauna. In case he’s interested in trying either of these. Good luck!
